LA GARD 700 Firmware Update (January 2025)

During 2024 dormakaba released several new firmware updates for the LA GARD 700 series. The cumulation of these releases will start to become available over the coming months, and provides for additional features that have been requested globally.

It is not necessary to update existing locks, it is optional depending on whether end users desire the changes that the update offers, which are outlined below.

Firmware can be updated using 700 series software (A license is not required) and the Software kit for LA GARD 700 Series available to purchase from our online store.

Safelock Systems Ltd. will undertake free of charge firmware updates to any uninstalled lock sets that are returned and collected at the customer’s expense.

The latest software and firmware can be downloaded from our knowledgebase: LA GARD 700 Series software

Please note that updating firmware also requires that the device's bootloader is updated. The bootloader file is supplied in the software download package with the firmware files.

This feature requires that the bolt must be in the open position for access to the command menu, including for users to access the change combo menu item.

To enable Open 2 change, the bolt must be in the open position, and either the Master or Manager code is required. The default condition is that it is switched off. Open 2 change requires that the lock is fitted with a bolt switch, which is the case for all locks supplied by Safelock Systems Limited.

Where a deadbolt is installed, and the keypad is used to drive the deadbolt, Open 2 change is not advisable, as the keypad must be rotated to open the lock, and so any menu commands, including changing codes, must be performed with the keypad on its side.

An additional option has been enabled, and the previous listed options have been redefined per the table below

The Master code can be used to delete itself. There must be at least 1 Manager or User installed with ‘open lock’ privilege if in single mode. If in dual mode, there must be a minimum number of Manager(s) and users as defined by the dual mode setting.

Locks will continue to be supplied by Safelock Systems with the Master code installed, and owners are advised to consider that certain functions on the lock can only be carried out using the Master code. The Master code can only be reinstated by physically resetting the lock with a reset box.

Functions that only the Master can access:

  • Set time and date format
  • Manage the Manager
  • Change time delay and open window counting mode
  • Change combination length, turn forced code changes on or off
  • Change from single mode to dual mode
  • Manage alarm signals
  • Install additional locks (703 and above)
  • Enable time delay override
  • Reset the lock (Without a reset box)

Instructions and support

User Operating Instructions

Locks will be issued with updated instructions to reflect the new features. New instructions will also be available to download from our website on the relevant lock page. Instructions for older firmware versions will be archived and available to download:

It is possible to use a newer firmware lock with a keypad and vice versa, all versions are compatible. If however software is used to change settings, the lock and keypad must be on the same dated release, and so it may be necessary to use the software to update either component. It is possible to use the compare and audit functions without needing to update the firmware.

LA GARD 700 Series – New firmware

Firmware versions: Keypad 1.2.3.4, Lock 1.2.2.3

As a result of global feedback and to continuously improve the product, dormakaba have released new firmware for the LA GARD 700 series. The new firmware contains several changes which significantly improve the user experience.

Timescale and firmware updates

Firmware of existing stock is being updated, and locks are expected to be ready in the next few weeks. Firmware can be updated in the field using the Software kit for LA GARD 700 Series, available to purchase from our online store.

Safelock Systems Ltd. will undertake free of charge firmware updates to any uninstalled lock sets that are returned and collected at the customer’s expense.

The update is optional

It is not necessary to update existing locks, it is optional depending on whether end users desire the changes that the update offers, which are outlined below.

Forced code changes

Previously, when a new code was added to the lock, the code holder was forced to change the code, before it could be used to open the lock. This feature is now optional, and the default setting is that it is switched off. The Master code can turn on forced code changes:

  • Non-display keypads: #17
  • Display keypads: Command menu >System > Combination > Force change

Default Master code

To maintain compliance with increasing security standards, and with the removal of enforced user code changes, the Master code must now be changed during lock setup, and cannot be changed back to 00-12345678. As such, locks supplied by Safelock Systems Ltd. will now be issued with a default Master code of 00-87654321. The Master code has complete control of the lock system, including the ability to reset the lock, and should be changed on first use

This change also results in a different setup process where locks have been reset in the field, as such instructions and videos on our Engineer’s only website will be updated in due course.

Time delay and open window signals

Previously, when time delay was active, on entry of a correct code, the lock signalled 3 low beeps + red flashes, which indicated that time delay has started counting. This caused some confusion as the same signal indicates incorrect code. The new firmware now signals 3 high beeps + green flash on entry of a correct code, before time delay begins counting.

Display keypads only: There is now a low beep + red flash every 10 seconds when time delay is counting, followed by a high beep + green flash every 10 seconds when the open window is counting.

Add user process

Display keypads only: Now, by default when a user code is added, it automatically has the ability to open and audit locks. As such, unless Time Delay override is required, users can skip straight through to Add user and press Enter, without having to specify the privilege to open and audit.

Display time-out

The display now stays on for 20 seconds, allowing more time to complete command processes.

Timelock restrictions

On the 704-705 models, when timelock is active it is now only possible for the Master to change time and date. Manager codes no longer have this ability.
